Danny's Summer '06 Study Abroad
A decent size group of us left for the Lake District early Fri. morning. Some of us continued to Edinburgh that night while others headed back. We spent about 4 hours around the lake, taking a boat ride around it and hiking up a trail near a waterfall. It pretty much dominates lake Wedowee. O and today I found out that my roommate from the travel portion, Daniel, just heard from his mom that they bought a house on Wedowee also. Anyways the lake was gorgeous, surrounded by mountains, some jagged and rocky, others rolling and grassy. The town of Keswick was cool too, don't really know how to describe it. Then we got to Edinburgh around 10 pm and walked around a little hoping to find Scottish music like we found Irish music in pubs in Dublin, but they don't play that kind of music in pubs. Instead during the day, men dressed in kilts play the bagpipes in the streets. The first view of the castle was breath-taking. It sits upon a hill and is so big. We went there the next day and got a little tour by a funny Scottish guide. We also went to St. Gile's church, which has a cool crown top and modern organ. All the buildings are mostly stone, but it's a blackish look b/c of all the aging. That night we picnicked in a garden looking up at the castle then climbed this hill that had a random Roman columnade and observatory on it. We never made it to Salisbury Crags a small mountain that a lot of people climb to overlook the city. After the hill we went on a ghost walk, which was interesting to hear the alleged stories. Sunday, Daniel, Kristina, Lyndsey and I went to York. We saw the amazing York Minister, which I think compares to Notre Dame. Then we went on a walking tour seeing the Roman ruins (it amazes me the vastness of their empire) and we also saw many bars (gates) of the Medieval wall that still surrounds the city. We also saw a skit of the Mystery plays (plays that have scenes that tell the story of the bible, each scene has a new set which is wheeled out to the audience after making a parade through the streets). That's the gist of a packed weekend well planned by yours truly, the cruise director.
