Tuesday morning we went into Barcaldine to check out The Tree of Knowledge. When we pulled up we were surprised to find this town had five pubs in the main street, so guessing you could be a very merry drunk in this town.....
The Tree of Knowledge was a tree is regarded as the birthplace of the Australian Labour Party (ALP). This is because the town was the headquarters of the 1891 Australian shearers strike where policy and decisions were made. It was a 200 year old ghost gum.
We stopped the night at Jericho Showgrounds, so we could plug into power and give the batteries a good boost......
The next day we drove through Alpha onto Emerald and stopped the night at a gravel pit east of Springsure. During the days driving we saw heaps of a crop neither of us had seen in our travels, so asked a local at Emerald and he told us it was a crop grown for cattle fodder but he couldn't remember the name of the crop. After some research we found out it was called Leucaena, a tall crop about 1 1/2 metres high.
We also started seeing what we thought were Boab trees only to discover in Queenland these trees that look like the Western Australian Boab trees are called Bottle Trees. The bottle tree and the boab trees are not related. In December 2005 the EPA in Queensland stopped all harvesting of the bottle tree from the bush and farms for transplanting and only propagated stock allowed to be sold. The Bottle tree are now a protected tree.
Thursday was another day of driving through areas of both crops of Leucaena and more bottle trees, we stopped the afternoon at Lawgi Hall, south of Biloela. We parked next to the hall which had one end painted with Bottle trees.
Friday we went into Lake Cania and did walks up to the Shamrock mine and the Big Foot walk. We had lunch at the picnic area. We started to drive through citrus area, so stopped on the side of the road and bought a bag of oranges. Stopped the night at Binjour Range rest area and cooked up a beautiful mushroom risotto for dinner.
During the last couple of days we have a creaking noise happening around the wardrobe area, so we thought. After Alan had pulled apart the wardrobe we discover it wasn't in that area. Another day of being frustrated listening to this sound and finally we found were the sound was coming from........next problem is how to stop it!!!!!!
Saturday we stopped at Gayndah and bought a bag of mandarins. When in a citrus area, what do you do????? buy citrus and more citrus....... We arrived in Biggenden at lunchtime and spent the afternoon catching up with Fay and Stan. We all went out to the local pub for dinner. The next day we all enjoyed a BBQ lunch back at Fay and Stans. We went to the other local pub for a $10 dinner and back to say our farewells in the morning......Before moving onto Maryborough and onto Tin Can Bay to catch up with Sue and Gavin.....Had a massive spag bol for dinner....cooked up by Tania, Sue and Gavins house guest......Great company has been shared over the last couple of days with Fay and Stan and now catching up with Sue and Gavin....
