Hongkong to Sydney...
Well after a maniac few days in the crazy city of Hongkong, me and Sophie arrived in Australia looking forward to chilling out in Sydney for a few days before moving on up the East coast.
Personally, i think Sydney is slightly overated as from what everyone says about it you would think it was this amazing place. Dont get me wrong it was great to see and say i have been there done that and the scenery was beautiful, but Hongkong was hell of a lot better in comparison. The Harbour was nice to see on an evening when it was all lit up - the views of the Opera House and the Sydney Bridge, but it was more like an average city when it comes to everything else. There wasnt a great lot of ozzy people about - a wide mixture of different cultures, just like a typical city. I think perhaps we would of thought differently if we hadn't of visited Hongkong first, because there is seriously a wow factor about there!
I really did enjoy our stay there though. We stayed at the Jolly Swagman Hostel near Kings Cross - the beautiful place it is. (ha!) The hostel was very cool and equipped for backpackers - everything you need to know being on the doorstep. Met some awesome people here who we will be keeping in contact with and some of which we are carrying on travelling with up the East Coast (two girls from leeds) The only downfall with the Hostel is on the first night Sophie got her mobile pinched from her hands or at the side of the bed - whom we still believe is this Italian guy,.. and the bathroom was not very nice at all. Ee we thought Hongkong was bad - there was bloody hair, snot and everything you can imagine in the sink. Baby wipes called to our attention!!
As soon as we arrived at our Hostel in Sydney, we were introduced to the way of life with a big box of 'Goon' which is the crapest and cheapest wine going but all that backpackers can afford. About 5 squid for 4 bottles of wine. Im sure you can imagine how this tastes!! haha. We attempted Kings Cross on our first night, went in a couple of bars - very tacky street! Full of prossies on every doorstep and sex shops. Not what i imagined it to be like - very much like Amsterdam? It was an experience!
Whilst we were in Sydney we treated ourselves to quite a lot of meals as it was pretty cheap (and i blaim ben and curt for this - guys from Bedale we are travelling with in Australia, as they blow money like there is no tomorrow!) but got to admit we had an awesome sirlion steak and the works for about 4 squid!!! ha. The most expensive thing is drinking. We did go to an awesome bar at the Harbour though called Minus 5 which is an icebar set at -15c. Bloody freezing! My hands nearly dropped off. This was a really cool experience, and have some pictures to show you - the bar and furniture was made out of glass and even the cocktail glasses. The drinks were beaut! Really wanted to pinch the snowsuit too.
We visited Bondi beach which i thought was really cool too - very clean beach and chilled out, but i thought Manly Beach was just as good which we got a ferry over to see for the day. We all sort of wish we had stayed on Manly Island for a couple of nights as it was pretty nice ozzy town. Some of the waves at Manly were bloody hugge - i even dared myself to go in. Was a bit jubious about tiger sharks however but jumped some crazzy waves! Liam and Russell would love it. Very tempted to learn how to surf! ha.
Overall, i would rate Sydney as a very beautiful city to visit but very much looking forward to experiencing the 'Australian lifestyle' more up the East Coast...
