Took an hour van ride to Padangbai to catch the "fast boat" to Gili Islands. The only way to describe the ride is "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" or maybe a San Francisco cab ride without the hills and then add thousands of motor scooters swirling around. No seat belts, no a/c, and the van was packed. I sat in the front seat and from now on I've decided that it's best not to see where you're going. I hope my dad isn't reading this...
Gili is beautiful. Went on an all day snorkeling trip to four dive spots. Saw many colorful fish and a turtle! There are no cars or scooters on Gili, just bikes and horse-drawn carts. Rented a bike and rode around the island twice. It took about two hours. Had my first encounter with a squat toilet...it didn't go well. Plus, I spilled the water from the bucket all over my skirt. There are no dogs on Gili, just cats. Hundreds of them, almost all with only a twisted stub of a tail (some sort of inbreeding mutation). Most are undernourished, half are pregnant or nursing, the other half are looking to impregnate. Very sad.
