Sue, Zoe & I reluctantly left Cusco and began the last leg of our journey aboard a 10-hour luxury train to Lake Titicaca. We had never traveled so far by rail - and certainly not with onboard entertainment, linen table cloths, free drinks, and best of all a glassed-in/open air caboose from which you could see the beautful countryside go by and wave to locals in each town.
From the train, we went to a hotel beside the massive Lake Titicaca - the largest lake at such a high elevation - which borders Peru and Bolivia. Early in the morning we boarded a boat to our own "private" island for 2 nights, stopping at the Uros people's floating islands made of reeds and gaining an appreciation for the Lake's bounty. Our island held a hotel with about 30 guests the first night but only 8 of us the second. We kayaked around the island, hiked up sunset hill, stalked llamas and alpacas, and enjoyed a couple of real "vacation" (as opposed to travel) days. Then it was back to Lima for souvenier shopping and to board our plane home; a bittersweet ending to an amazing summer.
