Oh yes it's hot here as in 40c hot. Well last night after a mix up with the travel company we ended up doing a city tour at 7pm. Was a blessing in disguise doing the tour at night because it was a bit cooler. We travelled around on an open bus and saw about 1.5 hours of the city and surrounding area. Love the buildings big mix of French, Spanish and moorish style homes and mansions. Pretty easy to walk around here as well although you have to watch your step crossing the road due to cars doing right hand turns !! Merida is Mexicos second largest historic centre. It's very cosmopolitan and it nickname is La Ciudad Blanca or The White City due to the large amount of limestone that was used as building material. Merida has a milliion people living in it's area as is a very busy place indeed. We all really like it here but we especially love our hotel....
We are staying in the Hacienda Merida VIP.... we have the most amazing suites per couple. Each has a huge bedroom/lounge area. Then a bathroom as big as a bedroom and then another room which is a walk in robe with it's own fridge. All the soap and shampoos are made from local honey and are devine. The staff here are fantastic and the hotel is very boutique with a mix or morrocan and mexican feel. It truely has been an oasis for us during our stay here !! Highly recommended.
So today is our last day here in Merida. This morning we did a tour out to the coastal fishing village of Celestun. It was about 1.40 hours drive. It was not much cooler there even though we where on the coast. The whole area is a 600km2 of Natural Park and is a biospheere reserve. We are taken on a small boat ride out near the mangroves to see the beautiful flamingos that the area is renowned for. Did you know that flamingos are born White !!! and by around 3 years of age they turn that orange/pink colour due to their diet.. We had lunch which was really nice a the nearby restaurant that was located on the gulf of mexico beach. Did not enjoy our ride back as the van we where in had poor aircon and with 7 people made it quite sticky. Also our driver was 'nodding' off while driving....pretty scary....Jess had to keep talking loud and asking him questions to keep him a bit more alert.....never again
Well tomorrow we leave our wonderful hotel and head to our final destination.....Chichen Itza !! and our final night in Mexico will be in the seaside area of Playa Del Carmen... until then it's feetup and keep cool tonight. xxxx Alla
