Neil's journey
Arrived in a place called da lat yesterday afternoon after a long mini-bus ride up into the mountains. The thing stayed in first gear for most the journey and the bus was packed with locals - evertime you thought the bus was full, someone else would get on. The weather at times got really wet and visibility was zero - tried to forget about the 300 feet drop on one side of the bus....
Its a nice place though, it's much cooler which is a welcome relief for me and my sunburn - soldiers used to be sent here during the war for rest and recuperation and you can see why - it has a bit of an alpsy feel about it and being out of season there's only about three of us here.
Nothing amazing happening last couple of days so a quick list of events/thoughts...
1 - vietnamese disco in Mui Ne - think late eighties spanish holidays - they didn't play 'tarzan boy' though so bit disappointed
2 - condensed milk in coffee...A, it doesn't mix, it sinks...B, if I'd wanted 19 sugars I would have asked...C, is the war still going or something? Can i also have some bully beef and a meat dripping sandwich?
3 - Met a really nice couple on honeymoon for six months? They're going to all the places I'm going and taking the same route - have never gatecrashed a honeymoon before, told them our relationship just isn't working and that its me, not them.....
4 - Premiership football - on constantly in hotel rooms everywhere at no extra cost....why not save your subscription money for a year and come to Vietnam?
5 - sticking with football, you're always asked where you're from and who you support....they love english football all over SE asia - however, not many people have heard of QPR, i tell them that they're rubbish, that always losing really depresses me and could they knock a dollar off my cab-fare? Glad to see we beat the might Hull though - John Gregory eh?......
6 - Great food everywhere, its a bit sad but I really look forward to meals....
7 - Went to some sand dunes to see sunrise (well it just got light really) - slid down them on a bit of plastic and then walked up a river to a waterfall - all a bit energetic before 9am.
8 - Its so funny how even the smallest children know how to make a dollar from tourists - take the sand dunes thing, the kids brought the plastic sheets and gave you a demonstration (although you didn't aske for one) at the end you think you should give them something so you say 'how much?'...they say, 'how much you want to pay?'.....you give them what you think is appropriate....they look really let-down....you feel a bit bad.
