Left vientiane yesterday and took a songthaew (a flat bed truck with two wooden seats at the side) for the three hour trip to a place called vang viang. You can see from the pictures that it is a really stunning place - most of the photos are from a bike ride I took to a cave - passed all these villages that seemed totally lost in time - hardly any other tourists around either, I had the cave to myself - there was this fantastic lagoon outside where you could swim but I'd forgotten my shorts - the guy selling drinks wouldn't lend me his (i don't think he thought I was serious) - shows how the place is a bit different from vietnam where he definitely would have sold them...
The town itself is a bit odd - it seems to have been built around young backpackers - there are all these cafes with low cushions showing films and selling 'happy' shakes and special 'mushroom' pizzas (no prizes for guessing what they contain). All in all, its probably fantastic if you're about 18....in fact when I arrived I thought the town was empty - its actually full, its just that everyone is lying down!
Still, its a relaxing place and you can see why people would hang around here for a while - also the scenery is amazing. I think its a good time to come to Laos - everyone would love it I think.
Going to do some more bike riding tomorrow and check out some more caves - must remember to take shorts....
