We arrived to Hong Kong on the 19th July by plane from Shanghai. We had a slight nightmare at the airport when trying to check into the flight, nothing was in English so we queued up for 30minutes with some very pushy and loud travellers to actually find out we were in the wrong line and was heading to Beijing again!
On arriving to Hong Kong we got the train across to Hong Kong island which took about 20minutes. We then flagged down a taxi and got to our hotel 'The butterfly waterfront'. We was too early to check in to our room so we decided to have some lunch in the hotel restaurant. I had lamb shanks with mint sauce and roast vegetables and Eilidh had pasta which was amazing after eating rice and noodles for the past 4weeks! When we booked into our room we noticed a major problem... The bathroom over looked the bedroom was giant windows and NO blinds!! Luckily I came up with the brilliant idea of hanging our dresses across the windows giving us privacy haha!
We had a long walk along the waterfront overlooking Kowloon, we watched the light show on the buildings which were shown every night at 1945 and 2100. The theme of the one we watched was the Brazil World Cup.
The next day we went on a tour around the city. We got picked up from the hotel went up the Victoria peak via tram. Our tour guide Roger was very annoying, he said he was from London but kept changing his accent to all around the world! He also had a very strict time schedule if you was late you got left behind, we lost a family of 5 along the way! The views from the top of Victoria peak were quite poor due to a storm coming but it was fantastic seeing the lightening over the city. We decided it wasn't really that safe standing on a metal building on top of a hill in the storm, so we went on to our next stop which was the fishing village. The fishing village was quite disappointing it was really just getting on a boat and going around the small harbour for 5minutes then back again! Next stop was on to a jewellery shop to learn about which stones related to your birth year, we both as backpackers had to miss out on buying any! Our last stop was to Stanley Market to do some shopping and to have a look around the little seaside town. When waiting for the coach to pick us up again Eilidh got attacked by loads of mozzies, there must of been about 15 on her legs!
The next day we walked from our hotel to the main shopping area. There is so many shops in Hong Kong and you could spend a lot of money. The shops range from the top designers to Topshop and Marks and Spencer's! The buildings are built up very high reminds me almost of New York! There is a lot of traffic on the island but it's quiet no beeping like in china!
We found it quite hard to find restaurants in Hong Kong a lot of places were closed whether this was due to the time of year I'm not sure but we struggled finding good places to eat as most places were chain take aways.
After a quick visit around Kong Kong it was time to head to the airport and go to Vietnam! My impressions of Hong Kong is its very clean. Everyone is friendly and the public transport is fantastic. Most people seem very well educated and you can tell the country has a lot of wealth.
Two facts we learnt about Hong Kong told by annoying Roger - 1. They don't like the number 4 as it sounds like the word 'death' so in hotels they skip any floor with the number 4 in it! They also are superstitious and don't like the number 13 either!
2. The colour red is very luckily, if women wear red it's an attraction as they are meant to be lucky!
