We had booked an open-tour bus ticket for all of our travelling around Vietnam, we came to only 25 pounds each...we have since come to realise why...I came off the first bus swearing never to set foot on one again. Inside was made up of three rows of metal bunk beds, there was a frantic free for all to get beds near each other, which we managed, but right at the back on the top bunk. The drivers in vietnam are manic, none will sit patiently behind another vehicle despite the danger of overtaking. The whole 12 hour journey was spent sitting on the wrong side of the road, his own private lane, until he had to swerve violently back into the right lane to avoid on coming traffic hurtling towards us. Beeping the horn is a signal that they are overtaking, so this was also constant, so no sleep for us! Every time I drifted off (which was a miracle) I woke up in complete panic as I felt I was being catapulted through tunnel. It was overall a horrifying experienced, and I was absolutely convinced I was going to die!!! (Having said that, the other bus journeys have been so much better, and we dont have to get another bus like that again...so dont panic anyone!)
We arrived at Hue at about 9am, found our hotel and promptly went to bed, which wasn't very hardcore...just about managed to struggle up for lunch (its a hard life!) Hue is a strange city, divided up into the old area, the citidel, and the new area, especially thrown up for tourists, so we did the usual wandering around and sitting in cafes for a day, then headed over the the old city to see the palaces and temples there. Within the walls of the citidel was a lot more peaceful without the constant hassle from touts and motorbike/cycle riders, and we spent a few hours having a look around. After the citidel, we braved a crazy local market which was actually fairly intimidating, and we didnt really see another tourist there. Overall our walking/sightseeing day was good, but we didnt want to spend any more than 2 days here, hence why this blog isnt that exciting!!
