Our first blog from our first destination!
We have been in St Petersburg for about 2 days now and we have just about crammed in all the must see sights! Stayed at the Puppet Hostel which was reasonably central and pretty basic but clean and quiet.
The highlights of the city were The Hermitage, housing fine art, which was extermely grand and picturesque. We also enjoyed the view from the Collonade at St Isaacs Cathedral, as well as the multi-coloured domes of the Church of the Saviour on Spilt Blood which reminded us of sweeties! It's worth taking a walk around the centre of the city, as most of the buildings around the River Neva are stunning and unlike any that we've ever seen before.
The weather has been pretty brutal with temperatures below zero and much ice and snow - beware falling icicles when walking down the streets!! Russians seem to manage with high heels and single layers but we were well wrapped up.
Heading on the overnight train to Moscow tonight which takes about 8 hours but should give us more sightseeing time there.
More to come in the next few days!
