Had to take a 4 hour bus trip to Vietnam Border - really hot day again!Craig getting burnt on his shoulders was the worst possible place because we had a ½ km walk between the Cambodian and Vietnamese border - really struggled as the sun was definitely the hottest we had felt it since we arrived in Asia! After about another hour we arrived in Chau Doc, a local town with virtually no tourists……none but our bus full that is.
We checked into the hotel which was the best room we had so far although the food in the restaurant was disgusting. One of the girls found a couple of long hairs in hers, Craig didn't get what he ordered even though they insisted he did and Laura had to wait 40 minutes for rice and vegetables! But enough of the complaints and onto the highlight of the night…
Jack arranged for us to go to the top of the local mountain by motorbike - each bike driven by locals with one of us on the back!Pretty scary with the traffic but after the initial shock of it, it turned out to be really good fun!Took about an half an hour to get to the top of the mountain through busy towns and windy mountain roads, which the local drivers thought were perfect for racing on…….with us on the back!!Arrived at the top to panoramic views over Chau Doc, the surrounding countyside and rice fields and even into Cambodia! The bar at the top serve local beers for $0.50 which we drank as we lay in our hammocks taking in the view!Just before we were due to leave a big thunder and lighting storm rolled in from the horizon which we had to race back to the hotel. We won…….just!
Woke the next morning at 5am to what sounded like orders/instructions and music being played from the load speakers attached to the telegraph poles in the street.Communism eh?Craig not feeling well - says it's one of usual throat infections coming on which doesn't sound good!We had 7 hour bus journey to Ho Chi Minh/Saigon which allowed us to take in some of the Vietnamese countryside. There is so much water here with many houses and even towns being built right on the banks of the rivers and sometimes on stilts in the river itself.Bus journey was pretty awful along very bumpy roads but was broken up with a ferry crossing over the mighty Mekong river!
Craig and Laura =)
