For the last few days we have been stranded in an eco-lodge in the mountains, an hour from the nearest town. There has been a national strike and all transport in the country, including out of Huaraz (the nearest town), was cancelled.
Admittedly the eco-lodge was a great place to have been stranded (albeit a little smelly).
In our boredom we even took up mountaineering and rock climbing. Craig decided he wanted to see a glacial lake, but not just any lake would do - he decided we would hike up to a particular torquoise-coloured lagoon at 4500metres. A 6-7hour trek. The best part was when after 2 hours of uphill walking we got confronted with a waterfall. We climbed up beside the waterfall, at one part having to climb a ladder made of twigs. The Nasca Lines flight pales in comparison - this was so scary.
When we got to this lagoon it was so misty we could bearly see it, let alone the glacier behind it. And we couldn´t find the path back. We eventually found a path to follow that wouldn´t take us back down the waterfall, after going in the wrong direction for a while. It was then all fine for a while until 4pm when it started raining (and I mean raining) with thunder and lightening. The locals we passed thought we were insane. Totally soaked to the bone. Luckily our cabin had a log fire and bath. Definitely no more trekking.
