Today was the day we all knew would come. Close to 100km in the heat and mud that bike wheels struggled to get through. We had hills, we had hot pavement...you name it, we had it.
By the time we hit the lunch stop there were definitely people feeling dejected and broken. Best part of the day was watching the team rally around those that needed a push and get them through the ride. People that had never met before putting aside their desire to get out of the heat and off the saddle to hang back and make sure our teammates crossed that finish line with us. Truly amazing. I knew I would have a 'cry day' here but assumed it would be a mental breakdown. So far my cry was when we rolled in to the orphanage to tons of kids cheering and smiling. My second cry was today when I watched the goodness in the people around take a front seat to their own needs.
Tomorrow will be another grueling 100km day but after today...I know this team can get through anything together. We had folks going back to pick up others losing momentum. We had others who arrived first cheering us in and we even had a few clever souls who arrived first and went out to get bags of rewarding cold drinks for everyone coming in. I didn't sign up for a race. I signed up for the pure goodness of helping others and my heart is full from the experience of it today. May lives of orphans will be changed...but mine too has been already.
Suffering through but loving it!
