Hello from Miami!
I was very sad to leave Costa Rica yesterday, after 7 weeks I had grown used to the pace of life, people, wildlife and even to being kept awake by the Howler Monkeys!
I arrived in Miami last night and have just cheered myself up with a huge breakfast from Jerrys Deli in preparation for my shopping trip later on!
The past few weeks have been brilliant and Ive met lots of new friends through my volunteering. The work wasnt too difficult really, apart from the 5.15am start to the day...I didnt realise how tired I was until I slept for 12 hours solid on saturday night after leaving!
We would clean out all the sloth enclosures at 6am and give the sloths some leaves for breakfast and then help out the staff with some sweeping and mopping in preparation for the days visitors. The other daily tasks were peeling and chopping carrots and sweet potatoes for the sloths dinners and then handing them out in the afternoon. They would get a balanced dinner of carrots, sweet potato, dog food and leaves!!
In between we would help out when tour groups came in, stopping the tourists from flashing their cameras at the baby sloths and touching them (they dont get handled more than necessary as they can get skin infections). We were also able to take some of the babys out for exercise and the sloth in my pictures that I'm holding is called Layla, she is 9 months old and really likes to be taken out for walks around the sanctuary grounds (although she prefers clinging to you rather than climbing anything!).
There were also wooden canoes at the sanctuary and we went out in them a few times in the afternoons which was very relaxing and great for wildlife spotting.
As we would all finish work at 3pm, most evenings we would go out on the bus to our nearest town (Cahuita, about 25 minutes on the bus) and too often would end up drinking Cocktails at Cocos bar (which has a great live Reggae night on the weekends!). I did have a few days off and went to the coastal national park at Cahuita and saw lots of Capuchin monkeys. Another favorite day out was to see the Bri Bri indigenous tribe and learn how they make chocolate from the Cacao plant...it tasted delicious!
Im off to Thailand tomorrow to start my 25 day tour so will be in touch soon x
