Early morning starts sees me leaving Bangkok for the Thai/Cambodian border. At the border there is the friendship markets lots of stalls and very chaotic, I felt very aware that I was western and we were the only westerners there. It was here I got to experience my first proper local style toilet, what a delight!! (Sarcasm for those of you who do not know me as well) For anyone who isn't aware, the toilets are not like are seated royal thrones the are holes in ground and you get to squat, hopefully i will have perfectly toned thighs by the end of the trip. We crossed the border with no problems and reasonably quick considering we were informed it can take up to 4 hours. In between the two border lines, one controlled by Thai border control and the other by Cambodian is a large area of almost no man land so large it contains a hotel, a bit bizarre. The border is chaotic and see some crazy sights of people pulling huge wheelbarrows loaded with goods it is about 10ft high and takes 3 people to pull.
Having safely crossed border we continue to Siem Reap, this evening we went for dinner at a local village we get collected by tuk tuk, these are local transport and are a four wheeled carriage attached to a motorbike. I'll be honest there may have been a few scream on my first tuk tuk ride as we bumped along uneven windy roads to the village. Locals say "dancing tuk tuks" as you can't help but dance as you are bumping along. The village we arrived in was so quaint and we were greeted by the village children smiling and waving we toured the paddy fields where they grow rice and then go to a local home for dinner. Siting on the floor in a wooden raised terrace we are served beautiful food Chicken Amok, Khmer curry and chicken and ginger all served with sticky rice. After dinner we go night markets and I learn how to barter, generally half the price they ask, I get a gorgeous Kaftan style dress for $4.
