Friday morning and we met one of the guides outside the hotel. Diego takes us on 2 hour bus ride to Rio Aguarico, the scenery becomes more and more amazon like with the trees forming a canopy over the road and bushes trying to climb in the windows. The heat is awesome and flies are already biting us. Before long a hornet lands on my arm, stings me, and leaves. We board a motor canoe for a 4 hour ride to the camp. When we arrive in the evening, the first thing to greet us is a deadly snake cruising past the camp.
We are in a group of 9 people, some travellers on massive r-t-w tours and some on short hols.
Friday night´s entertainment is a night out on the town, however being 400 miles deep in the amazon jungle, its a night of walking through the pitch black forest observing all the cool nocturnal animals. Under our sleeping area lives about 10 tarantulas in small holes.
They spin webs around the hole and when they feel the web moving they run out and pounce. Our guide, Enrique, pokes the web and they all pounce out on us looking menacingly huge, jaws salivating at the prospect of fresh human blood. It was brilliant.
Walking into the jungle, we had bats flying around our heads.
On leaves you could find huge stick insects, moths, beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, fireflies and spiders. When we turned off our torches illuminous fungus on rotting wood gave the jungle a party atmosphere. Locals use the fungus like hansel and gretel used bread crumbs to mark their path so they don´t get lost.
Sleeping in mosi-net, with some loud jungle screetches all night to lull us to sleep.
