May 31 - Departing once again; this is becoming routine. Portland bus to Boston, evening flight to London. Heading east, clear skies, a beautiful stratified sunset: a red-orange band between black ocean and sky.
June 1 - Early morning arrival, then a longer layover at Heathrow because of an aircraft change and unexplained delay in takeoff, will put us into Nairobi two hours late, close to 11 pm. But I love flying over land in daylight, comparing the map display to what's out my window. Sitting on the left side of the aircraft gives me a perfect view as we cross France, go over its coast, then fly parallel along the west coast of Italy, boats dotting the waters around the off-shore islands. Four years ago we were out there with Alison, Bobby, Lindsay, and Jamel, sailing through the Straits of Messina, climbing around Mt. Etna. Daylight also means it's easier to stay awake; I'm trying to make progress on my book, Nine Faces of Kenya, learning about colonial history.
Two hours later we're over the desert in Egypt. Long parallel ridges of sand reminiscent of Namibia, but not as regular, then pock-marked, like craters on the moon. Desolate, no sign of life but a solitary straight road, a sharp cut into the earth. We land in Nairobi, quickly getting through the evisa line this time (unlike in India). One of our group was on the same flight; transport to our hotel went smoothly, into our nice room by 12:30 am. Our balcony looks out onto Nairobi National Park, animal sculptures, photos, decor throughout the hotel.
