Well it's been a bit of a whirlwind so far. One week in the books and fifty some to go. I started out in Malaga Spain, where I met my old college friends Brian Helgeson and Casey O'Brien. Brian lives in Malaga and works as a tour guide, while Casey met us from Berlin where he lives and works.
We toured Malaga with Brian our first full day and saw much of the city and learned about most of it's history. It was HOT. Like tank top and shorts hot, where skipping the tank top wouldn't have been unusual.
The next day we took a bus to Cadiz, which is the oldest continuous port city in Europe and a favorite vacation spot of many a Roman Emperor. Brian lived in Cadiz two summers ago and thus was able to give Casey and I a tour there as well. This was also our opportunity to take a dip in the Atlantic and the water was not as cold as I expected considering it was mid-October.
We left Cadiz the next evening for Sevilla, a city Brian lived in when he first came to Spain, and my favorite of the three. Sevilla is located next to the river where Christopher Colombus set sail for the New World and is also home to the third largest church Cathedral in the world. The Alcazar is also in Sevilla and is truly something to behold.
We had to get back to Malaga so Casey could fly back to Berlin, but we had an excellent week together, filled with good times and many laughs. It truly is the journey along the way with good people that make a trip worthwhile, not just the destination.
If there is one thing I've been reminded of so far in this area of the world, its how much history there is. It truly makes the U.S. look like an infant in comparison and definitely puts things in perspective.
I leave for a 3-day jaunt to Morocco this afternoon and will be heading to Granada when I return before I leave for France. Should be a blast!
