When I applied for platform 2 I thought 'excellent if I'm accepted I' going to help in an less advantaged country where they were really poverty struck' When I found out I was accepted I got told the country I would be going to was South Africa. I thought how can we help in the most developed part of Africa! While I was in South Africa I realised that they did need the help we were giving, to me this was a great relief and also a tragic realisation! Within the first hour of arriving I saw shanty towns up the side of Table Mountain and it is sad to say that poverty can even strike in the most beautiful of places. The other guys I went with slowly became my family and as the days went by I was feeling more like I could show them 'me' the real one! We were combined for the reasons that my friends back home don't address - climate change, development and how unfair the world really is! Because the real me was shown I took more opportunities and felt amazing! If I did something and fell flat on my face my new family would pick me up and we would go again, these guys helped me smash every boundary and barrier I ever thought I had.I'm now back home and I was looking forward to putting these skills into use, but I have no-one to pick me up when I fall, I don't have my new family to be near me to make more confidant - I'm sure I will get over this barrier and I'm sure they will help from where ever they are be it 200 miles away. All of these realisations and new found friendships couldn't have been found without this opportunity from platform 2, the staff and mostly dfid. This experience has added more to my want to get involved in international development and to continue trying to make change happen.
