It was back to the Jungle early yesterday morning for our last piece of Mayan Enlightenment. All the ruins we have seen have been quite different so strangely you don't get bored looking at them, you learn something new each time. Our guide had the funniest voice, perfect english but it sounded like he had come straight from the Bronx in New York , the hands were going at all so i found it hard to look at him without laughing. Palenque is special as 50 years ago the tomb of the Former King was found during excavations beneath a massive temple. Everything is steeped in symbolism, the nine layers of the temple the 9 levels of the underworld, the palace of the sun set in the west, the tomb of Palenque was decorated with drawings of the nine god's of the underworld and a vision of his own reincarnatoin. Interestingly here the wife of Palenque ruled for 3 years in preparation for the handover to her son at the age of 12. It's amazing the questions and conversations you have while strolling around. It must of been quite easy for the Mayans to face death as they were sure that they were going back to the underworld and they were most defintely coming back to this world. The structures are really an amazing representation of a race already evolved. You would wonder how much more progress we have actually really made and what mark we will leave on history?
4 of us decided to follow on to the optional excusion to the waterfalls 'Agua Azul' afterwards. We were waiting for turquoise clear water with pools for us to swim in. Instead we were met with brown muddy water and park benches for a quikc afternoon nap. It's amazing how tired you get doing nothing!
We're leaving in a while to head to San Christobal for the weekend.
Have a good weekend everybody and lots of love from Mexico XX
