After getting the train back from Kingaroy to Brisbane, we took a quick flight to Sydney. We touched down about midday and took a taxi to our hostel 'Asylum'. Our room was basic but spacious and the hostel is located on Kings Cross which is a busy nightlife area in Sydney so it was pretty central. We were knackered when we arrived so we had a nap and headed out into the city to explore that evening. It took about 20 minutes walking to reach the Opera House and Harbour and it was dusky and lit up when we arrived. The Opera House is stunning, the iconic figure you assosiate with not only Sydney, but Australia, is amazing to see up close. The Harbour Bridge and Quayside were surrounded by a mass of pretty lights and the whole experience was pretty surreal. It made me feel how I did in New York, the amazment of finally being in a place that you have dreamed of visiting for years. After taking a few pictures, we walked towards the shopping area and found the collosal George St. We walked along, admiring all the exclusive and expensive shops and came across the internet cafe of our dreams...the Sydney Apple Store. We spent the next hour 'browsing' the Macbook Air's and checking our Facebook's. All we needed was a brew and it would be perfection. We then headed towards the Town Hall area of George St, which is very busy and brightly lit with bars, restaurants, shops and a massive cinema. It has a very New York feel. Too tired to party, we decided to go and see the movie 'Wanted'. The cinema was huge, and the film was great, so after our pleasantly chilled evening we walked home.
The next day we headed down to Circular Quay, which was insanely windy and we almost blew away, to enquire about a whale watching boat trip. We found a good deal and booked for the following afternoon. We spent the rest of the afternoon strolling around the city before heading back to the hostel to get ready to go out. We headed to Kings Cross to a bar, and took full advantage of the cheap vod-bulls. Olly, who wasn't feeling it, suggested a bottle of $10 champagne...and after the that, the night began. We got talking to a guy named Lee from Scotland and his German friend Andreas. Andreas, for some bizarre reason, decided to call me 'Koala' for the entire evening. I think the reason was that Chloe sounds like Koala, which is news to me! We also met some guys who were travelling and studying at Leeds back home. That encounter came about when Olly accidentally smashed a champagne glass on one of the guys legs. It was all good though, and after the apologies we all got chatting. At some point, not long after this, Olly told me he was going outside for a cigarette. Half an hour later I went to investigate and he was nowhere to be seen. Instead of finding Olly I found a group of Austrailian guys who became my fellow party people for the rest of the night. Sadly, in a blur of champagne and vodka, I cant remember their names, but they were good fun! After an hour or so of partying, and being unable to locate Olly, I headed back to the room presuming he would be there. When I found the room empty panic set in and I headed back to Kings Cross to search. I looked around a few nearby clubs...one of which turned out to be a strip club. When I walked in and found I was the only girl in the room, besides the half naked one dancing on a nearby table, I quickly got out of there. After a while of searching I sat down outside McDonald's and cried. Good drunken times!
I headed back to the room, feeling sorry for myself, and moments later Olly stumbled into the room. We hugged then laughed hysterically as we exchanged stories of the night. As it turns out Olly befriended a homeless girl, called Casey, and they shared life stories in a doorway - how beautiful! We then decided, despite the fact that we were both in PJ's, that a Latte was absolutely necessary. So we headed to the deli on the main street, which became our local for the 3 days. The owner of the cafe looked exactly like Bill, from Kill Bill, so naturally that became his name. We were also baffled when a woman, who looked the spit of Uma Thurman walked in. Needless to say we quoted the movie everytime we went in. After an eventful night, tears, laughter and latte's we headed to bed to get some sleep before our whale watching trip the following day.
When we woke up we realised that having a heavy night the day before going on a boat for 4 hours, probably wasn't the smartest idea. We headed out on the boat about 1pm, and within an hour we where chasing 3 humpback whales. They were amazing to see, absolutely collosal and we managed to get several amazing photos of them in action. At one point the whale dipped down into the water and everyone saw its tail, which was a highlight. However, it was slightly tainted by the very annoying woman who spoke in an insanely high pitched and whiney voice, who felt the need to repeat 'Did you see the tail?' to her two small children, continuosly for the rest of the trip. On the way back the boat got pretty rough, and a group of chinese tourists who ate 5 bags of McDonalds on the trip out, spewed the entire contents back up. Olly who was also feeling rough, suffered from a bit of sea sickness. So it wasnt the most pleasant journey home, but definately a worth while trip. We arrived back in Circular Quay about 5pm and walked up George St. and decided to go the movies, (for the second time in 3 days!) to see The Dark Knight. A bit of an overrated film in my opinion, but Heath Ledger's performance was incredible. After a chilled evening, we went back to the room and packed up all our stuff ready to fly out to Bangkok the next day!
