Hey guys, thought it was time for a wee update!
Been in Wellington a whilee now and so far I'm loving it! At first I was quite fed up as I was working all the time and moving hostels a few times so I didn't really meet anyone. Then I checked into the long term room at Base and met a whole bunch of awesome people! 608 crew! So now, I'm still working a lot, I'm just partying more!
My first temping job was at this geological centre place thing in the cafe and there was a conference on. When I went in, they were talking about functions and matrices! Advanced Mathics baybee! The manager in the kitchen was grumpy as. I didn't know where anything was and when she had to show me how to make egg mayo, I felt pretty useless. The uniform was hideous! It was right on the waterfront so as I was washing dishes, I could look out at the pretty view. The walk home was beautiful too.
The next day, I was at the hospital cafe helping with functions. I had to prepare tea and coffee, fruit and cheese platters (it reminded me off when I used to set up crackers and cheese for mum and dad when I was little) and then deliver food all round the hospital. It's a pretty interesting place to work, and it's weird seeing a hospital from a different view, I couldn't help remembering going to visit grandparents in hospitals in Scotland. It's just the same except the doctors all seem younger, cheerier and better dressed (everyone dresses casual here). The Uni's School of Medicine is joined on to the main hospital building and walking through it made me excited about going to uni, and really glad I'm not studying medicine!
That night I started my other job, doing room service in a 5-star hotel - very fancy! I just keep thinking of Maid in Manhattan and Suite Life of Zack and Cody. It's pretty strict and I've discovered that when your french supervisor yells "OPEN YOUR EYES" when you ask where something is, it's way more scary than when your mum does. I don't mind the job now though, now I know where things are and what I'm doing. I feel like I spend all my time either polishing cuttlery or pushing trollies around. The uniform is awful, black trousers with a yucky brown shirt, eugh! But I get yummy free food!
My other job is waitressing in a cafe/restaurant which is fine, and it's just next door to where I'm staying. All this free food means I never really cook for myself!
Wellington is awesome fun, my roomies are cool, we work til around midnight, get home and go out, the bars here are open til 6am! Just because you go to bed early at eleven doesn't mean you'll get a good night sleep. We have been known to wake each other up to go out and dance! $3 bubbles on a Wednesday, good times! The other night, we went out for Chinese (yum!) and rented movies. We get popcorn, rearrange all the furniture and have movie nights every now and again, its great!
I went to Newtown Zoo last week, it was awesome! The enclosures were a bit small but I saw loads of animals: a giraffe, tigers, lions, zebras, an ostrich, chimps, monkeys, a kiwi bird, a kangaroo and loads more! I felt (and looked) like a little kid, jumping around all excited! We went to the swing park afterwards too.
I've taken a trip up in the Cable Car and been to the Cable Car Museum but it wasn't a very nice day so I decided to leave the Botanic Gardens until it's sunny. I sat in the City Library and read "Cup of Tea" by Katherine Mansfield, NZ's most famous author. I've been to the National Library of New Zealand and to Civic Square. The waterfront has plenty obscure statues and stuff, it's really artsy here. Oh and there's cafes everywhere. There are more cafes per capita here than in New York (that doesn't mean there are more cafes than people. BLONDE moment!!)
Yesterday I went back to the Te Papa Museum and got all homesick at the "Scots in New Zealand" exhibition. There were videos featuring bagpipes, highland games, scottish country dancing. Scots have done a lot for New Zealand and it was interesting to find out about it all.
I'm trying to save money so instead of paying $3 to use the washers, I tried handwashing and somehow managed to cut my finger. Then I hung my clothes ALL over the room, and the next day when they were still soaked I could either pay the $4 for the driers or pay $3 to hire a towel for my shower. That wasn't the most successful afternoon ever, at least I tried!
I only have one week left in Wellington so I need to cram everything i still want to do in. I don't want to leave Welly, it's so much fun!
Anyway I better go, keep the emails coming guys, they're awesome! (And they give me an excuse to buy a Chocolate Cookie from reception while I'm online!)
Oh and for those of you who don't already know, Mum and Dad have sold the house, they move south on May 30th. No more Stonehaven :(
Lots of love xxxx
