After all the rain ( thank goodness we weren't in the west where bridges were being washed away and roads closed) we woke up to a beautiful sunny day and discovered what a lovely town Oamaru was. Lilly, Ellie and I walked into town through the beautiful public gardens which left me wondering how NZ affords all these beautiful public spaces ? to get to one of the coolest playgrounds ever. It had a huge pipe that turned out to be a kid hamster wheel that 4 or 5 kids could get in and spin, a zip line made with an old crane, an elephant , Huge slide and penny farthing swings. Oamaru has a Victorian district with lots of artists working (got our best souvenirs) and penny Farthings to try. We left reluctantly to get on the road to Mt Cook. Surprisingly to travel to the mountains it was the straightest road in NZ. Arrived late afternoon and not too surprisingly the mountains are lost in the mist and the door to the bathrooms says to keep shut so the pipes don't freeze. Finally got to get out the warm clothes.....
