Hello, I hope everyone is well.
As the title of this blog post suggests, today was all about noodles for breakfast and frog porridge for dinner! Yummmm?!
So I'm usually one for cereal for breakfast but not today! Today we went out for seafood noodles for breakfast! I'm not a huge fan of seafood so I opted for the 'meat' soupy noodles..mystery meat! It was very tasty and like a broth of noodles, meat and bamboo shoots in a watery soup.
Then we went off to Orchard Road, the famous posh shopping street in Singapore to wander around the shops. It is one of the best places to take my baby cousins because there are lots of snazzy air conditioned shopping centres to window shop in - it is a bit hot to walk around outside with them during the mid day heat.
We saw lots of stalls in the shopping centres selling all different types of Moon Cake, ready for the Moon Cake Festival (I'm going up to Vietnam with my Auntie and baby cousins to celebrate Moon Cake Festival!). It is also known as Mid-Autumn Festival and is a public holiday in China. The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the few most important holidays in the Chinese calendar. Mooncakes are round or rectangular pastries, measuring about 10 cm in diameter and 4-5 cm thick. A rich thick filling usually made from red bean or lotus seed paste is surrounded by a thin (2-3 mm) crust and may contain yolks from salted duck eggs. Yum! (I guess I'll let you know what they taste like in a few weeks!?!)
(There are lots of different meanings behind the Moon Cake Festival - in Vietnam it recounts the legend of Cuội, whose wife accidentally urinated on a sacred banyan tree. Soon after urinating on the tree, she sat on one of the tree branches and the sacred tree began to grow and continued until it finally reached the moon, leaving Cuội's wife stranded there. Every year, during the Moon Cake Festival, children light lanterns and participate in a procession to show Cuội's wife the way back to Earth.)
ANYWAY...So after a little wander around the shopping centres we came home and had a rest and then went out to a famous 'Frog Porridge' local street restaurant. It was really busy and is open until 4am! Apparently it is really busy until 4am with every table full of people eating frog porridge! It was in the 'red light district' area of the city.
The photo is of the porridge and the frog broth/gravy with chilli and spring onions. I tried a bit of the sauce and it was really spicy! I didn't really fancy eating the frog (although I'm told it's just like chicken!)! The broth was full of broken up bits of frog bone with a little bit of meat on. I think the porridge is made with rice but looks just like oat porridge, it was quite nice! I was boring and had lemon chicken and fried rice (which was yum!) as the frog porridge was really spicy and I just don't like the thought of eating frog! (My neighbour at home has a pond and I love visiting the frogs! I wouldn't eat one of your lovely froggys Angie!) But it was interesting to see!
Enough for now...thanks for reading! It's very hot and sticky here. Just about getting over the jet lag I think and still trying to adapt to the temperature! Very humid with lots of thunder storms.
Lots of love to everyone xxxxxx
