It's our last day in Bali. We move on to Malaysia tomorrow and i think we're ready to go. Indonesia has been fun. After the Gilli's we moved to Candidasa in East Bali. The journey was a marathon. We took the public ferry instead of the tourist boat thinking we could save some money. Big mistake. The four and a half hour journey lasted nearly 9 hours as we had to queue in the harbour at Padangbai for 4 hours. We had to sit on the floor of the boat too for all that time and little kids we're being seasick. Not good!
Eventually arrived at guest house run by a mad aussie called Gary. Cooked a mean breakfast but told very tall tales to go with it. He organised a tuor for us with a local driver one day but we had to postpone it as darren wasn't feeling well. Went the next day and saw good sights. Many temples and water palaces. Spent too much on souvenirs.
The next day we moved on to Amed. A quiet place with lots of character and we found a beautiful wee bungalow. From here did 2 dives on the USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben, just up the coast. Was amazing. It was good to see darren really enjoying his diving. He actually said diving is as good as golf!!
Left Amed after 2 days. it was a bit too soon as the next place we went to was a bit of a hole! Lovina. It took us 2 hours walking in the heat with our backpacks to find a room that wasn't half as nice as our last room and twice the price. After a walk around we decided we hated the place so booked our bus out again, straight away.
Next stop was Ubud. The cultural centre of Bali. Quite a busy wee inland town full of art shops that dont seem to ever sell anything. We visited the Monkey sanctuary where a big fat monkey grabbed hold of darren's leg coz it thought he had some goodies in his bag. Honestly i was a wee bit nervous around them. We also went to see a traditional balinese dancing show, which was interesting but i'm glad i dont have to go see it every week. It was outside, and near the end the heavens opened and we felt quite smug as we were the only ones with our raincoats with us. I'm nothing if not prepared!
Then we made the mistake of coming back to Kuta ready for our flight back to Malaysia. The place is full coz of Ramadan and took ages again to find a dear room but its nice enough and we actually have air con for a change. It's just so grotty here tho. Dirty etc. Anyway, we're making our way to the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia tomorrow and then on to the Perhentian Islands for some peace and quiet before we go on to Thailand.
Keep you posted xxx
