Claire Maloney's Travels
What's occurin' down South
About a week ago, a bunch of us had a few days off so we decided to hit the road and go for a little adventure. Driving along, it felt like we were in a movie - had some oldies pumping out on the radio, sun was shining and only the open road ahead of us. (Just needed the headscarf and heart-shaped glasses and Thelma darlin' we would have been set! )
First stop was Mount Rushmore in Keystone to say whatsup to the presidents. It's really pretty there, not too busy with the cold weather but nice. Fun fact- each president's head is as tall as a six story building with each head having a 20 ft nose! Imagine buying tissues for a schnoz that size!
We then headed over to Deadwood, which is like the town that time forgot. It's this small old town which looks exactly like something out of an old western movie. There are all these little old casinos and saloons in the main street with the keg stands outside. Half expected the sheriff to burst out of one, brandishing his gun yelling that "this town ain't big enough for the boff of us!!"
Hung out at Saloon 10, which again was very movie-like with all these cowboy types playing poker and smokin their cigars. Now, don't get too excited, we are not talking about sexy young cowboys or even the broke back mountain kind, oh no, we are talking about the old-wrinkled-horse-has-been-put-out-to-grass variety.
However, they did have a live band which was alot of fun so spent the night having a low down ho down (not as dirty as it sounds, promise...)
The next day, was the best though. Snowboarding!! It was AWESOME!!!! After getting decked up like darth vader, it was time to hit the slopes. None of us had ever done snowboarding before and so spent most of the time splat on the floor. We didn't know how to get off the chair lift and so none of us lifted our feet with our boards up and ended up flying! The operator guy was not impressed. "Ma'am that is so not awesome!" Eventually got the hang of it though, and what an adrenaline rush!! So much fun! One bit was a bit hairy, was whizzing down at like a woman possessed when I suddenly thought oh crap how do u stop so I hurled myself sideways thinking I'd have a nice soft landing. Not so much hey. Did a backflip and got tangled up like a pretzel. Not cool man, not cool.
What a great experience!! xxx
