Claire and Richard's Travels
After another night of heavy sleep from the exhaustion of the previous days crawl through New York State, we were ready to hit the island of Manhattan. First stop the Empire State Building. $28 and 86 floors later we were gasping at the spectacular views over the city from the crowded observation deck. After an hour on top of New York we were ready to see what else the city had to offer. Next stop was the New York Public Library, a beautiful column fronted building with awe inspiring reading rooms and all manner of antique volumes and tomes. Next on the agenda was Times Square where a hundred foot illuminated signs enouraged us to buy. to do, or to see any number of things. After a short stop in the Virgin Mega Store and a CD purchase later, our tummies were rumbling and we stomped up to Central Park to enjoy a picnic of salad for the lady and beef for the gentleman. Sustained and raring to go, we proceeded to see what Central Park had to offer. We strolled through the beautiful recreational grounds (hard to believe they were in the heart of such a massive city) and saw numerous fountains, ponds, statues and the Strawberry Fields memorial to John Lennon. Happening upon a bike rental office and believing this to be a nice way to get around we saddled up only to find that our two wheeled movements were more or less restricted to the roads that run through the park and as such we were flanked by large numbers of cranky New York drivers. Having enjoyed a Snow Cone with views of the Jackie Kennedy Onnassis Reservoir (a big pond with a fancy name) we returned the bikes and made our way back through the park back towards Chelsea. As 'making our way back' involved walking about 50 blocks with a vast number of distractions along the way we didn't make it back to 'our neck of the woods' (our neck of the huge concrete forest) until around 8pm having stopped at The Chrysler Building, Rockerfeller Centre, St Patricks Cathedral, Trump Tower and Grand Central Station. We dined in style at Rosa's Pizzeria enjoying a tasty 'slice' (the biggest piece of pizza you could imagine - about the size of a man's face!) beore grabbing a few beers to enjoy in the courtyard of our hostel and prepare our report, watching fireflies and wondering what amazing things we would see the following day.
