Our arrival in Hong Kong yesterday left everyone absolutely exhausted. The last train journey turned out to be the most rickety, with screaming babies, snoring old men and a driver with a tendency to ring the horn in the middle of the night, for no apparent reason. Still, we had another fairly long journey before we actually got into the city - we landed in Shenzen then had to make our way through immigration, which was odd. Felt more like making our way through an airport with our passports and departure/arrival forms to fill in, but pretty soon in the humid heat we all rendezvoused on the other side (in Starbucks) with Bobo who directed us towards the Subway station, only 40 minutes on the underground and we would be there!
EVENTUALLY, our hostel in Hong Kong was within sight, and it turned out to be small, but clean and exactly what we needed after a day and a half of travelling. We all had showers in just 15 minutes of hot water, then had a wander around our street, just off from Nathan Road on Kowloon. We were all pretty gutted it was our last night as a group - as tomorrow everyone would be going their separate ways, so on the evening Bobo suggested a last meal together somewhere nice she knew around the corner. It was an incredibly posh restaurant, and we all felt extremely underdressed in our cut off shorts, tshirts and flipflops! Not to be put off we all ordered seafood, trying to ignore the chefs picking out our meals from nearby tanks though. Claire had grouper and Liam had prawns, which was yummy, but extremely overpriced - especially when the restaurant added a 10% service charge (ridiculously as we did try to get a waiter's attention on one occasion, only to be waved away?!) and a charge for the tea and nuts we hadn't even ordered. It seems nothing in Hong Kong is complimentary! Purses & wallets significantly lighter, Bobo then suggested the 'cheapest' bar she knew of nearby for some goodbye drinks, which turned out to be an Irish bar with pints from £7 a go. No thankyou! Most of us returned from the evening on an anticlimax, and decided that because we were all coincidentally sticking around in Hong Kong tomorrow too we'd meet up then aswell.
