Checked in did chores and looked around town. Got ourselves ready for the boat trip tommorow.
Found out today that Mark and Rachael have got engaged yay! Congratulations!!
Met some friends in the hostel bar from Fraser Island.
Sun 3rd September
Checked out and putted bags in storage. Wandered along the sea front and had lunch before we headed of to catch our boat.
Boarded the boat at 1pm and went to Hook Island for a snorkel which was cool, saw lots of cool fish and bright coloured coral. We helped to hoist the sails which is quite tough, but it was good to get involved and help out.
Sailed onto Nr Macona inlet for our first nights sleep on the boat. Had a few drinks and got to know our fellow crew members. Suzanna and Andrea from Fraser were on our boat, we also met a nice couple called Chris and Debbie and a couple of load Cocknies called Kelly and Jodie.
Went to bed pretty early as still tired from fraser and the overnight bus. Claire had the disco bed which had the speaker next to her pillow!!
4th September
Woke up really early at 6am. Sam is the skipper of the boat and Zack and Ryan are the crew members.
Spent a couple of hours on Whitehaven beach this morning. We walked up to the look out point to see the pretty inlet, mountains and sand and sea. Bumped into a big lace monitor lizard on the way up! We then went for a swim and the crew picked us back up at 11am.
Had lunch onboard 'The Hammer' and then went on to do 2 more snorkels around Haslewood Island. The first was at a drop off, like where Nemo lived. There was a really strong current which when you swam at it like crazy you still didn't move! We snorkelled again just around the corner near the beach. Ace!! We jumped off the boat and swam to shore and then back again. Saw lots of cool fish and took picutres with our underwater cameras.
We stayed the night in Syd Harbour and drank a few more beers and had an onboard bbq. The 2 cocknies got really drunk and one of them kept getting lost on our quite small boat!!
5th September
Saw some turtles when we got up in the morning coming up for air - they can stay underwater for up to 8 hours without coming up for air. Today we were mainly sailing back to Airlie beach as it was a long way back. We volunteered to give a hand and got to have a go at steering. Helly did a big donut and I got to drive us through unsafe passage!
We arrived back at 11am and checked back into the hostel. In the afternoon we hung out at the lagoon and went for a swim.
We met everyone off 'The Hammer' in our hostel bar and chatted to Debbie, Chris and Sam the captain and his friends.
6th September
Up really early to catch a 5.15am bus to Townsville. We caught the Ferry from Townsville over to Magnetic Island and then a us to our hostel 'Magnums.'
We went for a swim from the beach near us called Alma Bay and Hel got stung by an evil jelly fish!!! oww. We then went to our hostel bar for a jug of beer and met 3 French boys who invited us for a bbq - we couldn't turn down free food, it would be rude!!!!
We fed some freindly possums and sat on the moonlit beach - all very romantic then bed!!
7th September
Did the Fort walk this morning, which was a walk around all the old 2nd world war artillery sites and store houses. There were some good view points above Arther bay looking out at the mainland.
We were supposed to see lots of Koalas but didn't boooo!!! We saw loads of cool ants nests and Claire nearly stood on a small yellow snake oops!!!
When we finished the Fort walk we headed off to where we thought Arther Bay was but ended up accidently walking to the other side of the island to Horseshoe bay whoops!!! Had a wander round the shops then got a bus back to Alma bay where we got stung by jellies again - don't like that beach anymore, so went to use the pool at the hostel instead.
After tea we had a jug of beer and played cards then went down to the beach again with the French guys and an American and a Japanese girl and fed the possums again.
8th September
Checked out in the morning and had a walk along Jeffery beach and along the rocks around the headland. We saw lots of lizards and cool fish and some Rock Wallabies. We played cards on a sticy out rock but one blew away booo!!! so we are now missing a 3 of spades - we mourned it!!!
We then got the bus to the ferry then the ferry to the bus then the bus to Cairns. We got to watch 2 films on the bus and had a friendly bus driver which was great as it was our last ever Greyhound bus experience!!!
Arrived at the hostel at 8.30ish and had a beer and played cards then went on an explore into town to get cash out. Got the courtesy bus back and went to bed.
9th September
Went on a job hunt today. Phoned up all the hostles in Cairns for work but there was nothing going. We phoned a place in Cape Tribulation, up in the Rainforest, which did have work available woohoo!!!!
Had a wander in to town still asking about work and busses up to Cape Trib. Had lunch by the lagoon and then back to the hostel. Phoned P.K's hostel up in Cape Trib to confirm that we could start work on monday.
Had pasta the got very drunk at Giligans and watched a band yay!!
