Today was rather a cruisy day as we didn’t need to get ready and organised until 10:30. As such, Breakfast was a rather casual affair in the luxury that is the Metropol with the harp playing in the background and white gloves waiters on call to replace your latte. Oh, the hedonistic life in the land of ... wait ... the land of communism. Oops.
Speaking of Communism, today we visited the Kremlin and later the Treasury Museum. We were met by our guide and ushered towards the entrance for our 10:45am entry. The Kremlin, and in particular the Treasury have set entry and exit times and you are supposed to adhere to these. The inside of the Kremlin is rather sparse, with several government buildings and 4 main chapels. We were shown off the victory cannons that Napoleon had to leave behind in 1812 and then shown ‘thle largest cannon in the world’ - except it’s not. Our guide is certainly down the line when it comes to answering questions, every answer comes according to the Gospel of Lenin. This cannon was followed by ... the biggest bell in the world.
There was a private chapel for the royal family, one for burials, and one for coronations. You weren’t allowed to take photos inside of the chapels but we did see a number of original frescoes.
The Treasury is well timed and you definitely need to have left by that time. There are a large number on display here, including the Russia. Crowns, Thrones, wedding dresses, weapons, armour and even a section for the horses of the royal family. Unfortunately, we were dragged away from the military section and escorted off the property forthwith.
Lunch was up to our own devices and the afternoon as well with us splitting up
And agreeing to meet in GUM at 4pm for a coffee. We did manage to all meet up and I even managed to get a replacement lens cap for my camera. We went to a restaurant called Sherbet, where, despite stuffing up our order completely we did manage to get a decent meal.
