Do you know how sometimes your body knows before you when it's going to rain? Well, mine did this morning as I struggled to get out of bed. It was over-cast as it is many mornings. It was after eight when I finally got up and got going. I closed the windows to keep the rain out (normally, I keep them open so I don't have to leave the fan on) and refused to dwell on it. Instead I made myself think of what I needed to do to prepare for my classes and meditate on my first cup of coffee.
It was slow going all day. I had science with the Kindergarteners today we made spaceships that spun on top of a rod because of the way they were weighted down by steel balls. It was probably the most exciting thing all day and not just because I got to talk to five year olds about aliens and UFOs. I think the weather was slowing most people down. From what the weathermen are saying, it looks like it's going to stay this way until Friday. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to stock up on hot chocolate. One of my fellow teachers said she needed to make a trip so if it's not raining too hard we'll go tomorrow.
Today was payday and even though it was smaller than it normally will be (I've only been teaching a week and my rent deposit was taken out) there's something exciting about that first paycheck. When I got home it was still sprinkling so in addition to the things I went to Daiso to get I also picked up an umbrella; somehow my raincoat just doesn't work (possibly because it gets a little too warm with it on).
After I dropped my shopping off at my apartment, I went down the road to my other favorite coffee shop "Gato Negro" which is owned by a friend of a friend. I'd go there in the mornings before work but it's not open until 10:30. Even though it was after nine I knew I had a lot to do and I haven't been able to go yet. The café latte was exactly what I needed and I was introduced to the turtle they keep in the terrarium (as opposed to fish in an aquarium). It was a perfect mix of casual and quirky that I love in a coffee shop. Plus I like to support small business, especially those owned by first-time young people; I'd like to hope that if I opened a coffee shop, my friends and their friends would stop by as often as they could. Anyways, if you're ever in Namdong-gu, I highly recommend it.
When I came home I sat down to my desk to write a few more letters after fixing dinner and looked out of the window. The high-rises were misted over by the rain and Journey's 'Lights' started playing in my head so I turned it on and listened to it several times until tonight's playlist was solely Journey. It turned out to be just what I needed; there's something about Journey that gives me the extra kick needed to get things done. I even did the dishes tonight instead of waiting until the weekend (I live by myself and don't use that many dishes so I can get away with just rinsing them off until then).
As I sit down to write, I realize that there is something soothing about watching the rain while holding a hot sweet drink that makes words flow easier. It's a comfort zone that isn't always that easy to get to. The light rain is likely to continue all night, so I will leave you with that and enjoy the warm glow of a warm drink on a rainy night.
