Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
After 13 hours of travel we arrived in Vilnius to join our group. Our guide, Vita, conducted a short orientation walk, followed group meeting about the trip. Admittedly, Robert and I were having a difficult time staying awake. Dinner was in a local restaurant. Today our morning started with a walk with a local guide around the old town of Vilnius. There 2 cathedrals across the street from the hotel, St. Anne and St. Paul. Much of the architecture is Baroque style. While the Russians occupied Lithuania, many large squares were built. There are many parks inside the city, sometime known as a city within parks. We visited Vilnius University where 20000 students attend. From there it was a short walk to the Jewish Ghetto which was walled in during world war 2. Before the war, Jews were 37% of the population. Now there are about 4000 in a population of 3 million. Lunch was at a local restaurant. All I can say is potatoes, potatoes, potatoes! Although Robert did have some good borscht. Tonight we are going to the philharmonic given by local musicians (5euros). Almost caught up on jet lag....
