Back in Australia after a quick hop over the Tasman sea with Air New Zealand. We are staying in the centre of Melbourne for a couple of nights surrounded by designer stores - how will my excess baggage cope with that!!
Found a great place for breakfast; Bowery to Williamsburg very New York, waffles with fresh berries, cream & maple syrup - not so healthy version. We did a whistle stop walking tour of the city taking in all the sites; Federation Square, amazing views from the Eureka Sky Tower, a wander along the South Bank to the aquarium. We went in search of trendy Fitzroy using the city's free tram - didn't find it! We spent an age in the Queen Victoria market, absolutely vast with huge sheds of delicious looking seafood, meat, deli & veggies - as well as heaps of junk to buy! Fish for lunch from the market stalls, yummy!
We took a tram down to the beach at St Kilda with the rich kids racing their super cars along the front - quite the show. A few drinks in a local bar and a wander back to the tram admiring the stunning old federation houses along the way. St Kilda is quite bohemian, it's a shame to see so much being gentrified and sold to the highest bidder.
I've been moaning about 'not enough seafood' throughout our trip, the place we found had everything on the menu - I had steak! (Indeed).
We've enjoyed our short time in Melbourne, it's a bit grubby with heavy Asian influences but that adds to the appeal. It reminds me of New York in many ways, very cosmopolitan with a young & hip vibe!
We covered around 12 miles on foot yesterday; a new daily record! Blimey, no wonder we are tired!
Next we head to the Great Ocean Road all the way to Adelaide. A few stops along the way should see us reach Port Campbell by 6pm this evening - it should be a stunning trip with amazing views.
