After our daytrip to the Tablelands we had a day to relax, so we did all of washing ready for our flight to New Zealand on Monday and then went to the shopping centre for some last minute bits and pieces. We also went further into Cairns and went to Rusty's Fruit Market - it was full of locally grown exotic fruits and everything smelled amazing, so we bought ourselves a melon - it was so cheap! Today is 9th May, Liberation Day, and to celebrate 70 years of freedom we went on our very last trip in Australia - a day trip further up the coast to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest. We started off with a drive up the coast road towards Port Douglas, and we saw loads of wallabies sunning themselves in a field by the side of the road. At Port Douglas we had a quick drive through the town, before heading a bit further up to the town of Mossman where we stopped for morning tea and had a look around the saturday markets. From there we carried on towards the Daintree River, where we got on a cable ferry to cross into the rainforest. Our next stop was at the Jindalba Boardwalk, where we had a guided walk through the rainforest with our guide George - he is an Aborigine so he was telling us a lot of their stories and what they used the different plants for. We also saw lots of different birds, a huge golden orb spider and even a large lizard hiding in a tree. By the end of the walk everyone was getting hungry so we carried on up to Cape Tribulation, where we had lunch on the beach. It was a beautiful sunny day so we had a walk along the beach as well to get some nice photos. From there we started to drive back down towards the river, but amazingly our guide spotted a wild cassowary with a chick by the side of the road so we stopped to get some photos! We were all thrilled to see one, because there are only around 1000 left in the wild and they are very hard to spot! From there we made a quick stop at the Daintree Ice-Cream Company where we bought 4 flavours of ice-cream, all locally made with exotic sounding fruits - it was delicious. Next up we went down to the river to have a wildlife cruise - we went up the Daintree River and spotted quite a few crocodiles, including a huge alpha male called Scarface basking in the sun! We also saw loads of flowers, rainforest plants and beautifully coloured birds. Afterwards we had a quick stop for afternoon tea, before heading to our last spot of the day - Mossman Gorge. It was really beautiful, we went on a boardwalk to take pictures of the gorge and then went for a swim - it was a bit chilly, but very refreshing, and we got a good 20 minutes or so down by the water which was a great end to the day. We then had an hour or so drive back along the coast to Cairns, and we had one more quick stop at the Rex Range Lookout to get some photos of the sunset over the coast - the colours here are really pretty and the sky turns all different shades of pink and purple as the sun goes down. We had a great time, it was the perfect way to end our travels in Australia. We have 1 more day here which we are going to use for packing and sleeping, because we have a very early start on Monday to go on to our next stop - New Zealand!
