We knew when we booked our trip to Darwin that we would be here during the Wet Season, but for the first few days it was pretty good weather apart from a few little rain showers in the afternoon/evenings. The last few days however have shown us just how wet the wet season can get. It started on Saturday as we were driving back to Darwin from our tour to Litchfield National Park, but luckily the storm only lasted about 15 minutes and was over by the time we were back in the city. On Sunday it started pouring down with rain in the afternoon, but luckily we had some washing to do so we were only hanging around in the hostel anyway. On Monday morning it was a bit overcast but still fairly warm, so we decided to head down to the wave lagoon to have a swim (this is the only place in the CBD where you can swim in salt water, as the harbour is full of nasties that could kill you). It was a lot cooler and less humid that it had been for the first half of our trip, so we were quite enjoying being able to walk around without having to stop for water every few feet. The tourists who had just come off the cruise ship however were obviously not accustomed to the tropics, they were sat around in the shade everywhere, bright red, panting and waving their little fans at their faces! We felt pretty local! Down at the wave lagoon we had loads of fun swimming and playing with bodyboards - there are 6 different wave patterns that come on for 20 minutes at a time, then there's a 10 minute gap where you can just have a gentle swim. We stayed for a couple of hours and then got out to go for lunch - at just the right time as it happened because a massive storm appeared and it poured for around 15 minutes! We waited it out and then found a nice restaurant by the waterfront, and all was going well until we had got halfway back to the hostel and the heavens decided to open again, and this time it didn't stop! This was the heaviest rain we have ever seen, worse than a winter storm back home, and it continued for the rest of the day (luckily we could get free wifi in our room so we just chilled out watching some tv). Today the weather has been so so, alternating between cloudy and rainy, so we haven't done much either except for pack up our bags ready to get the train to Alice Springs tomorrow - hopefully we get some better weather down South!
