Our time in Monterosso al Mare was wonderful. Rick Steves says that the Cinque Terre have a way of messing up your momentum....this couldn't be more true! After the hustle and bustle of Rome, visiting the lovely, quiet, Cinque Terre was just what we needed! Plus, I made a new cat friend! Stippey! He was a cute little black and white kitty that trolls around the town of Monterosso al Mare and waits for tourists to feed him or give him love. While eating at a local restaurant one of the servers told us that he is owned by a local Italian woman and got his name because, this woman went one day to pick up her husbands paycheck (stipendio in Italian) but she saw this cat and forgot about the paycheck and came back with the kitty instead! So he got the name paycheck/stipendio and is called stippey for short!
Our days in Monterosso were lazy and we enjoyed walking around and I really enjoyed checking out all the little shops with fun locally made items, including some very lovely handmade leather sandals. ;)
Our bed and breakfast was called Il Giardino Incanto, (the enchanted garden) and it was beautiful! There is a private garden across the cobblestone street that only guests have access to. Each morning tables were set up with linens and flowers and a bunch of yummy things for breakfast, and each evening they offered homemade limoncello. Limoncello is a very strong lemon alcohol beverage that Italians particularly love to end meals with. WAY to strong for me though!
Our last night in 5 Terre we went to a nice dinner at Miky and had wonderful seafood and a delicious dessert. Cinque Terre reminded me a lot of the way things happen in Maui....in that you don't do a whole lot....you just RELAX. Apparently there are quite a few people (Americans and others) that come to visit and never leave! It is quite charming and I was sad to leave!
Next is Firenze! (Florence)
Ciao!
