Finally after three weeks I have managed to put an update on here. Internet access is very limited and when you do manage to get on it’s painfully slow.
We are having an amazing time out here. Considering we are in depths of winter we have been very lucky with the weather and the sea has been beautifully clean and warm. I have been attempting to body board most days, however I seem to be sharing most of my waves with 5 year olds. The big waves are a bit further out reaching up to about 15 feet and look totally terrifying. Trev is itching to get out there but just needs another couple of weeks for his arm to get better. We were watching the surfers this morning and a pod of dolphins came swimming past. It seems to be the first signs that the sardine run is on its way.
We went for a shark dive in an aquarium last Thursday courtesy of my lovely friends at HCL. We were lowered into a shark tank in a plastic box with just a mask and swimming costumes. We held our breath and went to the bottom off tank where sharks were swimming right by our feet. They paid absolutely no attention to us but we managed to get some good pictures.
We spent a week up in Jo’burg last week visiting Trevor’s family. It was like an English winter up there without radiators so I spent the whole time tucked in as many blankets as possible. We got taken off roading in the 4 x 4’s which was great fun. The guys driving them were nuts!! There were a couple of hairy moments where I thought the cars may flip but they managed to gain control just at the last minute.
I’m not sure whether it could be seen at home but we had a lunar eclipse the other day. It was very strange. Within an hour the once full moon was completely covered by the earth leaving this eerie orange glow in the sky. Trev took a million pictures capturing the whole thing so I’m sure we’ll upload them on here at some point.
We visited a township this morning to distribute blankets, jumpers and hats as there’s meant to be a cold front coming in. It was truly uplifting spending time there and seeing all the unconditional hard work that people are doing to build communities. I was expecting to find extreme poverty and total chaos but instead there were children in creche’s, people growing their own fruit and vegetables and people generally going about life in an orderly fashion. There is still an awful long way to go but the signs are promising.
Time seems to have slowed down considerably since we have been out here and we’re adapting well to a slower pace of life. Everybody is very chilled out which is extremely infectious. We shall be spending another week on the coast before heading to Cape Town for a week and then flying out to Indo on the 14th July. Every day is offering a new experience and I’m relishing every minute of it.
PS Aunty Marion, The stars are a little different down here but the water still spins down the loo the same way as home
