An Unexpected Journey with Chris Wall
In a nutshell this country is unbelievable!
Everyone says that Australia will take every penny you have, but that of course is so true! Especially when you choose to scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef on numerous occasions, take a yacht around the Whitsunday Islands and cruise over the famous Fraser Island in 4x4 trucks for a weekend! ... just some of the antics that i have been entertaining myself with over the past 3 weeks!
After experiencing the delights of SE Asia for the past 2 months, Australia seemed like a doddle in comparison. On arriving i quickly befriended some travellers who were heading south in camper vans, just what i had planned for myself, luckily enough they had one space available! So like 10 peas in 2 very small pods we started our journey south.
Day one brought on the delights of the Great Barrier Reef, spending just over $250 for a catamaran to take us to the outer reef seemed fair for a whole day of Scuba diving and endless supplies of food, with the hope of spotting sharks, turtles and much more! ....
Heading south once again; we called in at Mission Beach, where some of our group braved the 14,000ft Sky Dive!! Townsville, Seventeen Seventy (landing point of Captain Cook), finally hitting Airlie Beach, the home of the Whitsundays, with 3 days booked on a yacht, through what promised to be the most breathtaking part of my trip, proved to be so, so, so right! With the ever changing patterns in the silicon sands of the Whitsunday beach, swimming solo with green turtles, watching dolphins from afar and experiencing the Australian night sky without the interference from the city lights, all i can say is many stars fell and many wishes were made!
South again brought us to the delicious town of Bundaberg, where 125 years of rum making history lies. We could tell this place was the epicentre of distillery as hundreds of narrow train tracks were constantly supplying the town with miles and miles of carriages filled to the brim with sugar cane, the main ingredient for the Bundaberg rum. Obviously we had to stop off to see what all the commotion was about, so we became tasters for the day, getting just a little bit tipsy on their finest batches of Liqueur and Dark Oak rum.
Penultimately landing on Rainbow Beach, we saddled the 4x4 trucks and headed to Fraser Island! 3 days of driving through dunes, climbing headlands for the best views and resting in Dingo fenced camps; proved to be one of the more relaxing trips, regardless of its itinerary. There cannot be one single highlight on this trip, however when it comes to mentioning one for its beauty i have chosen Eli creek, a fast flowing, fresh mineral water producing creek! Through a short walk up the side of the creek, you can jump in; fill your water bottles and just lay back and let the fast current take you down to the ocean! Words cannot describe!
Through to Noosa! Our base camp for the incredible Australia Zoo, home of the Crocodile Hunter! The most surreal feeling when you know the most influential man in animal conservation once walked the path you are on, also inspiring with so much history of his achievements and how he affected the lives of so many. One show in particular stood out, that of course was the croc feeding! ....
Finally landing in Brisbane, a place to rejuvenate, waiting for the delights of New South Wales!
