Morocco will be holding elections in late November 2011. The challenge is to involve a population where 50% of everyone over 15 are illiterate. Advertising takes the form of a type of graffiti that I have seen painted on walls over the past week. It is a horizontal grid numbered right to left. Each square in the grid is allocated to a political party and each party is represented by a symbol. The photo shows a tractor symbol for a party who have an agricultural focus. I have seen a rose and I have also seen a party who includes photos of the candidates.
On election day the voter will recognise the symbol or photo of his choice and place a thumb print beside it on the ballot paper. A dye that will last about 4 days is applied to the voters thumb when they have voted to ensure that each person votes only once. Oh and King Mohammed VI has decreed that any party found trying to manipulate the vote will be immediately deregistered.
