Finally I made it out of Beijing my first stop was Xian for two nights and unfortunately I only had time for ONE tourist attraction, the Terracotta Army, well what else does anyone go there to see?
I didn't bother booking a tour as I wanted to take my time at the museum and I must say it was the best decision that I could have made as I spent the best part of a rainy day there just wandering around.
There are four main areas to the museum, an Exhibit Hall detailing the finds and history of the museum, then there are the three pits, 1, 2 and 3. I then followed the lonely planet advice of the order to visit the pits, 3, 2, 1 and it was well worth it as I left the best one till last. I have to admit that I couldn't stop taking pictures particularly in pit 3 as thats' the most impressive pit, well it's more large a huge aircraft hangar. Being tall also came in handy, as did my Londoner pushing in technique when I walked it as I was able to take some great pictures at the front of the pit without having anyone standing in the way too much. Pit 3 is also the most interesting because there are archaeologists at work excavating and restoring figures. I can't really say all that much more about it except that it was awesome and well have a look at the pictures for yourself (if I managed to do them justice).
If you ever go to the Museum, I recommend catching the 914 bus back to town afterwards, it took a while longer than the route there but was fun because the driver and conductor were both crazy, stopping off every time they saw people waiting by the road for a bus, getting off and hassling them to get on their bus by shouting "Xian, Xian".
I actually wish I had stayed in Xian another day as I didn't actually get to see anything much of the city except for the subway and trying to figure out which exit to use to catch the shuttle bus back to the airport.
