After arriving back in Sydney early that evening i had several hours to kill before picking up the Greyhound bus to my next destination. With all my bags the only place i could felt i could wait was sydney central train station next door. I thought this would be the safest place to wait however throughout my stay i had to stay on alert as there were many homeless people circling about and although there were people about i didnt feel exactly safe and kept my bags looped through my legs at all times. I then decided to wait in the burger king chairs as it was more public but i coudlnt really excape and was asked for money or watched etc. It felt like a long few hours to kill and was pleased when 8.45pm came and i could go and wait for my bus. I was placed next to a girl called louise and we instantely got along and chatted for ages on the way to byron way and watched shrek 3 before spreading out on the chairs to try and get some sleep. After 11 hours i finially managed to sleep for 15 minutes before one of the scheduled spots we wernt allowed to stay on the bus for and so had to get up and go in the services for an hour. Soon enough we were on our way again and beforehand we had both booked different hostels but once unpacked, met up in Byron Bay town.
Byron bay is paradise! The sea is clear blue, there is no cloud in the sky, there are hardly no tourists and the are miles of sand. Unfortunately here there are a lot of homeless people again who shout out at you as you go past and so i dont feel it perticuly safe to walk about by yourself when it starts to get dark. We decided to sunbathe on the beach for the morning before heading into the lovelly old style town and get some food. This was the first 'proper' meal i have had since coming here and even though it was expensive it was amazing. I had a sweet potato and cous cous burger (I bet Julie and Dido would love it) with saultee'd peppers, yum! After this we took a long hour walk to a lighthouse on the top of a hill. The walk was very scenic passing over a beach, through a forest before the board walk where you can see all the whale migrating upwards towards hervey bay to have their babys.
The Whales are close to the shore because they need to stay away from the east australian current as it runs in the opposite directions so you get the most spectaluar views of them. There are lots of Australians here, showing support for the whales as they go to war out at sea with the Japanese every year where they kill the whales. They Japanese say its for scientific research but no papers have been published and the meat ends up in restaurants. In 1980 the whales became indangered and so hunting them was banned. The vote for banning the hunting of whales happenes every year by all countries and last year illegal banning only won by 1 vote/country as Japan bribes poorer countries with money - even though there not even near any sea - to make it legal again. Last week when the vote happened again, the meeting turned into an argument, no one won and its been held off for another year. I cant understand why people would want to kill these amazing creatures! When we made it to the top of the hill we relaxed and rewarded ourselves with an ice cream (there like italian ice creams our here in had mango and macadamia) before heading back down for a paddle in the near by bay.
We decided to meet up in Louises hostel in the evening for a few drinks before heading out where we met 2 canadians, a german and an american. We chatted and played card games for a few hours with the canadians betting they could drink us english girls under the table. To be honest they probably could but we had 2 bottles of wine between us and they had a goon which equals about 5 bottles. If you look at my pictures you will probably be able to see why they were then not allowed in the club! They have a law out in australia is that if you have had too much to drink or if you go to the bar and ask for more when youve had enough you will be chucked out. If you get served the bar staff will be fined $5500 or if something happenes to you while your drunk and walking home then its the responsibility of the club. The rules are quite harsh but very sensible. The 4 of us that got into the cheeky monkeys had a great night, every ones so friendly and the dance floor is a few metal picnic tables you have to dance on.
Walking home at night is also amazing. The southern hemisphere is also spectacular for the night sky. I have never seen anything like it before. Its like millions upon millions of jewel stars lit up against a black canvas - and thats even when there are street lamps. I will get a photo furthur on in my travels to try and show you.
On not having much sleep i slept so soundly that night before my next tour to Nimbim.
