The temples of Angkor
8am we were picked up by our tuk-tuk driver Mr Savuth. He had impressed a Dutch guy so much that he made a website for him to advertise and recommend his services. So we thought this would be great to have such a highly regarded driver.
First stop on the tour was Angkor Wat. We arrived there around 8.30 and of course were very impressed. It was so big that it didn't even seem that busy with the rest of the tourists.
I was really (perhaps a bit too) impressed with the 4 large pools inside amongst the columns. It really felt like I was in the Tomb Raider game (sorry for the Tomb Raider ref, it's so overdone here, they've even have the Tomb Raider tree at Ta Som).
We were both impressed, and enjoyed just walking around taking it all in, without wanting to repeat myself this is pretty much how we felt at all of the temples.
So then it was off to Angkor Thom and into Bayon and Baphoun.
Bayon was seriously impressive, so many stone faces. We must have taken the most photos here, did some stalking of tour guides who often new the best spots to take photos. This was definately our favourite temple.
I think we got a bit caught up with our photography (the fact that I said photography rather than taking photos speaks volumes) but we did take some good ones.
The next biggy was Ta Som, this is the jungle temple overgrown with trees and stuff which help to keep the relentless mid day sun off us. Some amazing trees on the ruins, again loads of photo opportunities, of course with the Tomb Raider tree too.
So the next day we went to Pre Rup, Banteay Srei, Bantay Samre and Prosat Khan. All very nice but too much to talk about.
Next day we had an early start at stupid o'clock (also known as 4:30am) to catch the sunrise at Angkor Wat. Very busy, and funny see so many people in a line taking hundreds of photos (I was one of them but who cares about that).
After sunrise we snuck off to Bayon, which was practically empty. Really great to see it like that, so quiet and peaceful.
We really loved our 3 days at Angkor, and glad we didn't try to cram loads in everyday. It was a great finaly to our SE Asia travels.
We liked Cambodia a lot, I think because of it's poverty and bad history it makes it even more amazing that the people are so kind and friendly. One day we'll come back to visit, along with Thailand and Laos, I think we'll skip Vietnam next time.
