Second day in Auckland and i'm already falling deeper in love with the city. It has to be the most comfortable city on the planet. It's not too hot, but still hot enough, it's so clean, the pavements are ridiculously wide, the buttons for crossing the road have this really futuristic sound and there's a timer counting down from about 20 seconds at the crossings showing you how much time you have to cross the road. It makes something as simple as crossing the road so fun. I might just go and cross some roads now.
Anyraight, to the point. Today, me and Tom went to the zoo!! which i must admit was something that i looked up quite a bit before coming here, partly because it's one of the only zoo's in the country that has Kiwi's!
We arrived at the zoo around two (just for the rhyme) and used our coupon that we got the day before at the sky tower and student cards. $14 for two people, epic saving
First off we went to the 'pridelands' area, and after about a minute of being in the zoo we saw a giraffe, then another appeared. There were also zebras and a rather pompous emu. The giraffe scratched it's head against a tree making quite a funny photo for Tom.
Further into the pridelands we saw a couple of really lazy looking lions who seemed to have given up hope. After thinking we weren't going to see an elephant because there weren't any in the section we saw one being washed down inside.
We moved on to the 'hippo river' and you guessed it, we saw a hippo. They're so cute, i love how they have so much useless flab and are so relaxed. Definately the animal at the zoo that looked like it was having the best time.
We went to see some sea lions swim past us after that and taunt Tom by going too fast for him to get a picture though with enough determination he got a couple of pretty good ones in the end. Unfortunately the penguins weren't on show, especially as they were one of the main animals i was looking forward to but we still saw loads of amazing animals.
Later in the day we went to get some lunch, i had one hell of a rocky road and tom had a cornetto! then we went to the thing i'd been looking forward to all day: the kiwi exhibit. At first we couldn't see any kiwis and for a moment i thought they wouldn't be on display but then one appeared, and then another! they were about twice the size of what i expected but just as adorable. They kept scratching themselves with their beaks and moving them around the floor as they walked like they were sniffing with them. Shame to think there aren't many of them left
Afterwards we went to the meerkat area and got to crawl through these big tunnels where we could put our heads up and look through these glass domes into their home. Most of them were sleeping but one was standing guard. When we got out of the tunnels we saw two fighting (at least we think they were fighting, just kidding) they stopped whenever we said anything though. Like they were doing it for our entertainment.
It was a brilliant day and we went to the western springs park for a bit afterwards.
