hello people,
Driving around new zealand is half the fun of this whole trip. Most places we have been the actual traveling is a bit of a drag. Your really just trying to get to the next destination. Dont get me wrong some of the bus journeys in south east asia were and experience in themselves, but here you really look forward to the driving. The roads are fun to drive (even in the beast of a van that is snuggles) and the scenary is spectacular! A day driving about here is a day well spent.. stopping in all the scenic spots and drinking tea. Its also quite difficult to get lost as there arn't that many roads and certanily not much traffic to worry about. The occasional sheep crossing is the biggest obstical. Attually i take that back.. the snow and ice can be a bit tricky!
Our first majour stop after Christchurch was Lake Tekapo. Its a massive lake with this crazy blue water they have here which is caused by some kinda dust in the water. It makes it look like someones put a blue paint brush in it! We had a brilliant walk (or tramp as they call it here) up a big hill in the snow (call mt somethingorother.. so technically we climbed a mountain) with some amasing veiws of the lake and all the snow caped mountains. And after such a stressful day of wondering about the hills we ploped into some hot pools in the evening to warm up.. a lovely hot bath with a stunning veiw!
Next we headed up to Mt cook and walked up to the glasial lake at the base of the mountain. The lake was totally frozen over so we could do some of the walk on the ice.. and i didnt fall over once!
Next we headed down to Dunedin and stopping on root to have a gander at the Moetaki bolders (there the ones in the pic with the blog). The tide was high and the waves where massive so we had to run along the beach trying not to get our feet wet.. chris failed in this task.. hehehe!
Dunedin is a really cool town on the south east coast with an amasingly beautiful peninsular with many a stunning walk to do.. which we did! The Local brewery is Speights and natrally we had to go and have a tour round. The beer is really good but the advitising is a bit rubbish.. luckly the beer speaks for itself. We got ranted at by the drunken locals on friday night.. brilliant! Apparently this chaps sister lives in ireland and can drink 18 pints of ginneis.. we narrowly escaped him trying to marry me and chris although i very much doubt that a marrage by a drunch chap in a bar would count.. all in all it was a good night out! We also spied some of the local wild life.. penguins and seals although we didnt see any albotros! A highlight of Dunedin was definatly a trip to the cadbury's factory.. we even got to see how they make easter eggs but its a secret so i cant tell you! Chris locking us out of our van in the rain with nothing but a loaf of bread and some eggs was definatly not a highlight.. the AA man thought we were right prats!
We took the southern senic root though the catlins. It was the most amazing drive ever.. so good that it took us twice as long as we expected cause we kept stopping. This meant we ended up in the middle of no where in a camp site with no one in it. That is no one apart from a giant dog who i didnt get the pleasure of meeting untill it was pitch black and it came running at me from the darkness.. scary moment.. i though it was some kinda bear-wolf-dog! The beautiful southern senic root ended, as is so often the way, in the dullest place of all time! Also known Invercargill.
However, finally heading north brought us to lake Te Anau and Milford Sounds. My goodness its a beautiful and chilly place. I couldnt discribe Milford sounds if i tryed so all i shall say is its a fiord and bloody mavilous! Have a look at some of the pics!
And finally we left the beautiful and peaceful and headed to Queenstown. And can you believe it.. nither of us jumped off anything! We did go and have a look at the bridge where i jumped off last time and watch some other fools throw themselves off.. it looks higher than last time i was here! We did managed to get an awsome day of snowboarding in.. the best snow iv ever boarded on! To top it off chris fell over more than me.. hehe.. woohoo!
And that is how we came to be in Wanaka.
Its a hard life but someones got to do it!
love love
