Bula from Fiji!
We're just waiting for our boat back to the mainland for our flight to L.A. So we thought we'd get a quick entry in for this week. We arrived in Nadi last Monday evening with overcast skies, wondering was the weather gonna keep annoying us. The hostel come hotel come resort we'd booked into in Nadi, despite having looked great online, was a little bit suspect (including cat sick on the ground). Not the cleanest place, or comfortable, and why it was called Nadi Bay Resort is a mystery as there isn't a bay anywhere for miles around it! But hey, that was just our stopover for the first night, and though we were worrying about whether our island accommodation would be similarly suspect, we set off on the 5 hour boat transfer early the next morning.
The boat stops off at all the islands in the Yasawa group, so it's a pretty busy journey with people going to and from each island at each stop. Ours was the last stop so that's what caused the 5 hour journey. When we eventually got here, it was well worth the wait. We were greeted on the beach with a traditional sea shell necklace and fruit cocktail each. After our welcome we were lead up the hill to our tree top bure for the week. The room was really nice, comfy bed with big pretty pink and red flowers on it, cleaned and beds made every day, a real step up from our 4 months of hostels! We even got free shampoo - waow a big bonus for us backpackers, its sad what excites us now.
So we dumped our stuff and instantly went to the beach for a dip in the sea. The water was so clear and the sun was blazing, and it was just what we pictured. We had a drink in the sea with a couple from New Zealand just an hour after we arrived so we got straight into the vibe. It's just basically a holiday resort, but with a really nice atmosphere, and not like any in Europe. We hired snorkel gear from the dive shop along the beach for $5 for the entire week, (about 1 pound 35) and discovered that there was fantastic coral literally metres off the beach. It maybe wasn't as spectacular as the Great Barrier Reef, but to get up off your sun lounger when the sun got too hot, walk into the sea, stick you snorkel mask on and swim over coral is a pretty great way to spend a week! The area out front is also marine reserve, and the manager Alfie was talking to us one night about the scheme, and told us that 5 years ago, the coral was dying. And looking at it now, it just shows what you can do with good management and time!
Unfortunately, we did have one day of cloud, which was actually quite nice being able to lie around in hammocks reading without getting too hot, and also one day where Claire went and pulled a Singapore! Yip, sick again! And Chris running around doing everything demanded. Though it was only one day thankfully, and we've had overall a really good week.
Each day we lay by the sea, read, relaxed, snorkelled, and then went for dinner each night. The food has been really quite gourmet, a bit above what we're used to and a bit hit and miss but we've been able to find something each night (apart from the night Chris stupidly tried lobster and didn't make much of a dent in it!). Not much else to say really other than this was exactly what we had planned for Fiji, and most of you would really enjoy a bit of time here. There's lots of options out here, and lots of people spend a few days at one resort before hopping back on the boat to another, but we wanted to stop and in Fiji, that's very easy to do! Everything is done in such a laid back way, and sometimes too laid back if you're sitting waiting to see a dinner menu wasting away! But it's easy to get sucked into the slow way of life. You should try it sometime!
Anyway, L.A. Tonight and a trip back in time! We take off at 10pm local time on Tuesday 21st July and land at 1.20pm local time, Tuesday 21st July. I'm sure that'll mess up the body clocks! And we've got less than 3 weeks left! So we're determined to make the most of this.
Hope you're all well, look forward to seeing ya all soon! Vinaka!
Love Claire and Chris xx
