Day 20 - 'The big burn'. Up quite early to go for breakfast on the beach without a cloud in the sky. Really nice breakfast with as much fresh fruit and fresh fruit juice as you wanted with the usual eggs, bacon and pancakes.
After breakfast we headed for the beach and here we sat under a palm tree until lunch with the odd swim in the sea to cool down. With the temperatures up in the 30's, the suncream was getting a healthy outing. Really nice lunch again at the beachside restaurant before settling back in on the loungers. Shade was the order of the day after a while as temperatures continued to rise. A quick walk down the beach to see what was further afield but we had to return soon after as Alice had got burnt legs.
We headed up to the hotel to sit by the pool under an umbrella but this was just as hot so after 30 minutes we returned to the restaurant to sit in the shade. Whilst we were chilling out a heard of cattle walked down the track between the hotel and the bar - quite a site!
Our taxi was due at 15:30 but turned up slightly early so we went to check out. Picked up the bill, only........$240 and we'd been there less than 24hrs!! This did include the taxi from the airport and the taxi to Kampot we were just about to jump in so not all bad and definitely worth it. Would love to have stayed for a few more days but our waistlines and wallet won't stretch that far, well, the waistline would have a damn good go I'm sure.
Jumped in a taxi for the 2 hour ride to Kampot, along the coast but just in land, driving past tropical forest and the Bokor National Park. Once there we checked into the Columns hotel and dumped our bags in the room. It's a nice 'boutique' hotel set in 4 restored colonial villas just a couple of rows back from the river.
Jumping in the shower it most definitely wasn't only Alice who was burnt, my neck and stomach had seen bette days aswell. Nothing a bit of moisturiser won't fix for both of us. Maybe Alice will have to crack out a pair of elephant pants to cover the legs!
Ventured out for a spot of dinner at a street restaurant after having a quick drink at the bar next door. Really good food but the table had a lot of rubbish under it and dogs were just roaming free amongst the tables looking for scraps. Kampot pepper showed itself to be quite strong with my beef loc lak and a little spicy chilli sauce with Alice's crab and rice with a couple of beers all for $5. Restaurant next door would have been over double that! Quick drink on the way back to the hotel at the Rikitikitavi bar before heading off to bed. Tiring doing not a lot getting burnt all day in the beach!!
