Oh. My. Days.
we have had such an extraordinary day here in Liverpool,
yesterday was the start of the Sea Odyssey event to remember the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, and a French theatre company called Royal De Luxe brought 3 giant puppets, the Uncle (who was 50ft tall), the Little Girl Giant (who wasn't little at all, she was 30ft) and her dog Xolo (who was 10ft) to tell a story of a Little Girl searching for her Father, who was a stowaway on the Titanic, and her Uncle searching for his niece to tell her that her Father had unfortunately died on the Titanic.
In the morning, we watched the Little Girl and Xolo come down James Street and onto the docks, and we even go to say hello to Xolo by stroking his nose!! As the Little Girl reached us, she put on her hat and goggles and jumped on her scooter heading for the docks.
Later on in the day we watched her Uncle wake up by St. George's Hall. He wore a diving suit, and as he woke up, they put his diving helmet back on. As he walked towards ChinaTown, you could see the amount of effort behind thes mavellous puppets, that at least 20 people breaking their backs to make these giants walk. Men were swinging on ropes, controlling his legs, from the vehicle behind the Uncle.
We finally reached Queens Wharf, behind the Echo Arena, and found our spot to watch the reunion between the Little Girl and her Uncle, after 2 long days of searching for each other. The Uncle made a casual entrance but the Little Girl had to arrive in style! She was sat on her little boat, which she used the previous day, with her yellow raincoat and hat and Xolo came running in and charged for the Uncle.
When she got lifted out of the boat, they lifted her right round, showing her to everyone, and headed straight for her Uncle where they shared a really sweet cuddle. Then she decided that she wanted to shake her tail feathers, so she danced to her hearts content and jumped 70ft into the air to show how overwhelmed she was.
Her Uncle called her over and she came and perched on his knee, where he was the bearer of bad news. He told his niece that her stowaway father had died and gone down on the Titanic. It was very emotional and the conclusion of the day was the Little Girl sat in her Uncle's arms, Xolo on his bed and they slept.
For me, this one of the best and inspiring pieces of theatre I have ever seen! The characters were so life like and I think that those characteristics made it more personal and enjoyable. Although these Giants couldn't speak and only had one facial expression, their eyes and body language conveyed the emotion perfectly! I, certainly, looked past the ropes and saw one Girl, one Uncle and one Dog telling a story to tens of thousands of people but just on a large scale where everyone could see. Obviously, apprection went to everyone behind the Giants otherwise without them, the Giants couldn't move.
Overall, I had an amazing day and someday I would love to be a part of something on that Giant scale :)
