Tiber Camping and Hostel, Italy
Hey everyone!
So I said that I would update the blog as often as I could to keep you all up to date with where we are and what we've been up to, unfortunately I've been a bit lacking on either finding the tme to sit down for long enough to write about our travels, as this is the first blog I've ever written Ill give it a shot!
Okay so first of all I landed in Athens at around 1 is their time, so it was about 11 ish maybe UK time, I got out of the airport without incidence and with only having to ask one person where to catch the bus from to get to Syntagma square in central Athens. As I stepped off the bus though I was not prepared for the sheer muggy heat, plus I was wearing jeans! Not a wise move me thinks. Anywho, I got to Syntagma square then it was just madness trying to find the right bus to get me to the hostel. I ended up going too far so I had to get off the bus and walk around trying to find the hostel. By this point as Kt had already made it to the hostel was on the phone to me trying to find out where I was... It was quite funny actually, but eventually I found it and all was good. The hostel itself is a great place to stay, it's clean for the most part, there's a shared kitchen and the rooms are okay, if only a bit hot. The first day that we were there we didn't reallydo much, but on the second day, we went exploring and walked in the general direction of the Acrpolois.
On the way to the Acropolis we passed the olympic stadium but didnàt go in, but one site we did visit along the way was the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and that was a sight to behold! It's amazing to think that in those times they were able to build a structure of that magnitude, and that's not even as big as the Acropolis! We did take lots of photos here and I'm hopingto upload some for you guys soon. We also saw Hadrians Arch as we were meandering over to the Acropolis which isn't quite as fantastic as the Temple of Olympian Zeus, but it is definitely worth going to see. After we had finished this we were nearly at the Acropolis, so after a light lunch at a cafe we carried on and got there. Now if anyone knows what the Acropolis is, I was not prepared for the sheer size of the actual place, and also for the other sites that we could see along our walk up to the top of the hill where the Pantheon sits. The first thing that we came to was the Theatre of Dionyssus which was really beautiful and there were some amazing marble carvings around the edges of this place which were amazingly detailed, it was fantastic.
We then carried on our walk up the Acropolis hill andmade it to the top. One of the first things that I will recommend to anyone who visits this place is when you get to the top, stop and take a look at the breathtaking view that you can experience from that vantage point. It was incredible, it also gives you an idea of how built up the city of Athens trully is as you can see how many houses there are and how far it stretches to. The highlight of this visit for me was when we actually got to stand in the shadow of the massive Pantheon which is at the very centre and is in the process of being reconstructed. It was amazing!
Right, I know I havent gotten even close to finished or up to date with this, but time is short on the internet here, so I will say this, if anyone gets the chance to go to Athens to visit any of theseplaces please do! I will update it again soon!
Much love
Chloe
