Wednesday has been bery Mexican. I did not make a spelling mistake just then.
Where Beto lives there are lots of indigenous people. Most of them don't speak Spanish, they speak the indigenous language of Zapoteco. The small town is very beautiful, but in a different way to what you would consider "beautiful" in Australia. The streets are dusty and still developing, but it is very rootsey, which is what Beto and I love about it. The place I stayed in last night is called "The Garden", which is one of Beto's family estates. It's on the outskirts of the town and is filled with flowers and beautiful garden architecture.
I went to the gym today, which was very old school. Then afterwards, I went to the Candy Castle (Beto's family's business). It's an ironic looking place, because there are lots of happy children getting candy, but there is a guy standing out the front with an automatic rifle. That's the way it is here in Mexico for people with big businesses.
From what I observe, Mexico is more or less divided into 3 classes of living - the affluent, the underprivileged, and the impoverished. Because Beto's family is able to help the underprivileged and the impoverished, they started a foundation about 7 years ago to teach young children music and give them the opportunity to travel around Mexico doing gigs. They also get given jobs at the Candy Castle and learn how to work. During their lunch break, they can sit and learn how to read and write in Spanish as well. Beto's parents really enjoy helping these kids to make sure they get a better upbringing than their circumstances had predisposed.
Right now, I'm chilling in a place called San Cristo, which is a beautiful little town in the mountains where Mexicans go for a get-away. It's 2215 and we're just having a shower now then we'll head off for dinner. That's also the way things are in Mexico. Who knows what tomorrow will bring when we awake in the backpackers...
LEARN OF THE DAY: Lots of Spanish. I learnt lots of Spanish.
